It is not merely a matter of going green, but it is also about controlling your energy bills and value addition to your property. We will discuss all that you should know about the grant, how the technology works and how simple the whole process is made by North West Energy below.

What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)?

The government of the UK is on a tour to achieve Net Zero and warming our houses is one of the largest issues. The old type of boilers uses fossil fuels, which are costly and environmentally unfriendly. To address this, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero introduced the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. The scheme offers a flat-rate grant of £7,500 to individuals in England and Wales who own property to cover the cost of low-carbon heating system installation.

The Key Facts

The Amount

£7,500 (It is a grant, not a loan, you do not repay it).

The Target

The replacement of the current gas, oil or electric boilers with an Air Source Heat Pump.

The Vision

To achieve renewable heating as cost effective as replacing a conventional boiler.

Grant

Who can take the Grant of £7,500?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is more inclusive than most of the other government schemes, which demand that you are on certain benefits.

The Single Major Criteria:

Home Ownership: You should be the owner of the property. This covers small buildings and domestic houses.

Land Registry: The applicant should be the individual whose name is on the Land Registry.

Existing System: You should have an existing system that you are replacing.

Note: We also like solar energy, but this particular grant is only applicable to the installation of the heat pump and not solar panels.

Heat Pump

Why is a Heat Pump a Good Alternative to a Standard Boiler?

As brands are shaking the market, North West Energy is concerned with offering a local and personalized service prioritizing the homeowner. This is why the switch is a no brainer in 2026:

  1. Huge Financial Incentives The initial price of a heat pump is now almost comparable to the high end combi boiler, at the £7,500 grant level. You are in effect getting a slice of future proof technology at the price of a vintage one.
  • Money Saving Efficiency The efficiency of a standard A-rated gas boiler is approximately 90-92 percent. A typical Air Source Heat Pump is 300% to 400% efficient. It consumes 1 unit of electricity to give 3 to 4 units of heat. It is this enormous payoff in efficiency that brings down your long-run operating expenses.
  • Reduce Your Carbon Footprint In the UK, heating contributes approximately 14 percent of carbon emissions. Switching to a heat pump will allow you to cut your carbon footprint at home by as much as 70%. With a green electricity tariff, you can heat your property virtually without carbon emissions.
  • Safety First A heat pump does not undergo any combustion. No gas, no oil, and no danger of leakage of carbon monoxide. It is an electric, clean, and amazingly safe method of warming your family.

Is Your Home Ready?

A basic level of insulation (Loft and Cavity Wall) is required in your home before we can install a heat pump. In case your house is specifically a leaky one, we can recommend certain insulation improvements initially. This will guarantee that the heat generated by your new pump will be fully in your home where it is needed!Take action now, to cut energy costs and maintain comfort all year round. Find out if you’re eligible to receive fully funded heating and insulation upgrades today – everything from survey to installation made easier for you.

How Does

How Does an Air Source Heat Pump Work?

After you have ever touched the back of a fridge, you have touched a heat pump being reversed. A fridge absorbs the heat in the internal parts and expels it. An Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) collects the heat that occurs naturally on the outside and transfers it to your house.

It operates even when it is cold!

The largest myth is that heat pumps are useless during the winter in the UK. As a matter of fact, these systems are able to absorb heat of the air even when temperatures reach -15 Degree C or -20 Degree C.

Capture: Unit outside gathers air and blows it across a heat exchanger with a refrigerant.

Compress: The refrigerant is squeezed by a compressor that increases its temperature substantially.

Transfer: This heat is then passed on to your central heating system (radiators or underfloor heating) and the hot water tank in your house.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Question

Yes, as long as you own the flat and have your own individual heating system. If you share a communal boiler, the rules are slightly different, so please get in touch for a chat.
A typical Air Source Heat Pump installation takes between 3 to 5 days. We try to keep the "no hot water" period to an absolute minimum—usually just a few hours on the day we switch the tanks.
Yes! In fact, heat pumps and underfloor heating are a match made in heaven. They both work at lower temperatures, which makes the system incredibly efficient.
In most cases, no. Air Source Heat Pumps are usually considered "Permitted Development." However, if you live in a listed building or a conservation area, we can help you check the local rules.
ASHPs can still extract heat from the air in cold weather. Some models have backup heating to keep you warm in extreme cold.
The government uses the Land Registry to confirm that the person applying for the grant actually owns the property. As long as your name is on the title deeds, you pass the test!
No, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is specifically for the heating system. While we highly recommend solar panels as a great addition to a heat pump, they are not covered by this £7,500 grant.
The grant is a fixed contribution. For example, if the total cost of the work is £11,000, the government pays £7,500, and you pay the remaining £3,500. This is still significantly cheaper than paying for a full installation out of your own pocket!
A well-maintained Air Source Heat Pump can last 20 years or more. This is significantly longer than the average lifespan of a modern gas boiler, which is usually around 10-12 years.
